If your editor has recommended you start blogging, I'd look around at some other sci-fi writer blogs to see what they write about (maybe that's what your editor is going for)? If it's just writing in general, then I suppose political commentary works.
Blogs are also a great place to self publish short stories (and I've even seen books written in blog format - where every day or week a new section / chapter is published).
